Three ways to check
- Brevard County's SOIRL map. The Save Our Indian River Lagoon program publishes a parcel-level map and project list; search your address. This is the authoritative source.
- Call the program. Brevard County Natural Resources Management, (321) 633-2016, or email IRLProject@BrevardFL.gov with your parcel ID. They'll confirm status and tell you which grant (upgrade or sewer-connect) your parcel is being steered toward.
- Ask us. We check parcel status as part of every inspection and every upgrade estimate, because the answer changes the price by up to $20,000.
Rules of thumb (not a substitute for the map)
- If your lot drains toward the Indian River, Banana River or Mosquito Lagoon — which is most of the county east of I-95 and a good deal west of it — assume you're in.
- Merritt Island, the barrier island, Port St. John, Palm Bay's canal neighborhoods, Grant-Valkaria, Malabar and river-side Melbourne, Rockledge, Cocoa and Titusville are the heart of the area.
- Systems within about 55 yards of surface water are the county's highest priority — those contribute an average of 27 lb of nitrogen a year each.
What "in the area" means
- The July 1, 2030 requirement applies: sewer connection where available, otherwise a 65%-nitrogen-reduction system
- You are eligible for the $6,000 minimum grant, and up to $20,000 depending on your parcel's nitrogen score
- A full system replacement before 2030 triggers the upgrade requirement immediately — you can't install a like-for-like conventional system
What "out of the area" means
- No 2030 deadline
- No grant
- Standard Florida septic rules (permit for repairs/replacement, DOH-Brevard)
